Honoring International Women’s Day: Celebrating Women’s Voices and Advocacy

March 8th, 2024

Today, on International Women’s Day, we take a moment to honor and celebrate the contributions of women who have been at the forefront of advocating for victims and survivors of domestic violence. At Rivers of Hope, we extend our deepest gratitude to all the women who have made our work possible, whether through advocacy, support, or ensuring that the voices of women are heard.

Rivers of Hope was founded by a group of visionary women in the community who recognized the urgent need to address domestic violence. what started as a small task force has grown into a stable nonprofit organization with over three decades of service to Wright and Sherburne Counties. Throughout our journey, women have played a pivotal role in our leadership and staff, driving our mission forward with compassion and dedication.

While domestic violence affects individuals of all gender identities, women continue to constitute the largest demographic of victims and survivors. Rivers of Hope remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting anyone experiencing domestic violence, providing them with resources to identify their options, navigating legal systems with them, and most importantly, reminding them that they are not alone.

On this International Women’s Day, we recognize the resilience, strength, and unwavering determination of women who have stood up against domestic violence. It is through their advocacy, support, and tireless efforts that we continue to make strides in creating safer communities for all.

As we commemorate this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to amplify women’s voices, advocating for gender equality, and fostering a world where every individual can live free from violence and fear.

Thank you to all the remarkable women who inspire us every day and who continue to make a difference in the lives of those affected by domestic violence. Together, we can build a future where empowerment, justice, and compassion prevail.

Happy International Women’s Day!

  • Safety planning

  • Assistance with filing ORders for Protection and Harassment Restraining Orders

  • Court accompaniment for civil and legal hearings

  • Assistance with identifying additional community resources.

In 2023, Rivers of Hope served approximately 600 adults.

Our Youth Advocacy Program focuses on helping youth who are experiencing family or teen dating violence. Our dedicated advocates provide one-on-one, school-based advocacy services to youth on a weekly or every other week basis, depending on the preferences and needs of each student. Our advocates listen to them, offer support, facilitate safety planning, and cover crucial topics such as healthy relationships, self-esteem, boundaries, and recognizing the warning signs of abuse. In 2022, Rivers of Hope served 200 youth.

Outreach and Education

In addition to providing direct advocacy services to adults and youth experiencing domestic violence, Rivers of Hope is committed to raising awareness and educating the community about domestic violence. We offer presentations to classrooms, civic, business groups, religious groups, and community partners. How do you support a loved one?

October 16th, 2023

When someone you care about is going through relationship challenges, it can be tough to know how to help. Your concern and willingness to support them can make a significant difference in their journey to healing and safety. As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we wanted to share ten ways you can support a friend or loved one who is experiencing domestic violence.

  • Set up a time to talk: Reach out and let them know you’re available to talk whenever they are ready. Your willingness to listen can be a powerful source of comfort.

  • Express concern for their safety: Make it clear that you are genuinely concerned about their safety and well-being. Your care can be the reminder they need of the importance of their safety.

  • Offer support: Let them know that you are there for them, no matter what. Assure them that your support is unconditional and unwavering.

  • Offer specific help: Ask them what they need/want. Whether it’s emotional support, assistance with practical matters, or help finding resources, offering specific assistance based on their needs can make a significant difference.

  • Avoid shame, guilt, or blame: Ensure they know that you do not blame them for what they are going through and that there is no shame or guilt in seeking help or making decisions about their relationship. This can help reduce feelings of isolation.

  • Help them make a safety plan: If they are open to it, assist them in creating a safety plan or encourage them to call Rivers of Hope to put one together with an advocate. A safety plan is a personalized strategy to ensure their well-being as they navigate their journey toward finding safety from abuse.

  • Encourage professional help: Suggest that they speak with an advocate who can help them identify their options and connect them with resources to help them find safety.

  • Continued support: Regardless of the choices they make, let them know that your support remains constant. Respect their decisions and keep the lines of communication open.

  • Encourage outside activities: Suggest activities or events outside of the relationship that can help them build a support network and regain a sense of independence.

  • Reiterate your unconditional support: Remind them that you will be there for them, no matter what. Your commitment to their well-being can be a lifeline during challenging times.

It’s important to remember that your role as a supportive friend or loved one is invaluable. By being there, offering support, and creating a safe space for them to confide in you, you are helping them take the first steps toward healing and safety.

What is domestic Violence?

October 6th, 2023

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we at Rivers of Hope want to shed light on domestic violence, the impact it has on our community, and the work we do to support survivors. today, we want to take a moment to talk about what domestic violence is and the various forms it can take.

domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors used to gain or maintain power and control over another person within a relationship. It can take place between intimate partners, family members, or household members. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of abuse throughout their lives. It is important to understand that domestic violence is not limited to physical violence; it encompasses a wide range of abusive behaviors, including but not limited to:

  • Physical Abuse: Any act that causes physical harm or injury, such as hitting, slapping, pushing, or restraining.

  • Emotional and Psychological Abuse: Undermining a person’s self-esteem and emotional well-being through tactics like verbal threats, intimidation, and constant criticism.

  • Sexual Abuse: Engaging in sexual acts without consent or using coercion and manipulation to force unwanted sexual activities.

  • Financial Abuse: Controlling finances, withholding access to money, or exploiting financial resources to maintain power and control.

  • Digital Abuse: Using technology to harass, stalk, monitor, or control someone’s activities, often through surveillance, cyberbullying, or tracking.

Domestic violence looks different for each person impacted by it. It can affect anyone, regardless of gender identity, age, race, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. Recognizing the signs and understanding the different forms it can take are ways that together we can address the issue of domestic violence.

Rivers of Hope is dedicated to providing support, resources, and a safe space for individuals affected by domestic violence. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.  Victims of crime act (voca) funding update and what it means for rivers of hope

January 27th, 2023

As we start the process of planning for our 2023 Enchanted Evening gala we are hoping that this will be our most successful event yet. 2023 will be a year filled with funding unknowns as foundations shift priorities and there will be a potential cut in our government grants. We will do our best to stay up to date, but for now I wanted to share what we know and what impact it could have on Rivers of Hope.

What is VOCA? Voca is the largest source of funding available to Minnesota crime victims and the organizations supporting them. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs (OJP) distributes approximately $54 million annually in state and federal funds to advocacy programs throughout Minnesota. Due to how VOCA is funded at the federal level, all states including Minnesota are receiving VOCA reductions. Reductions in funding will limit each program’s ability to maintain current staffing levels and meet the increasing needs of victims, this includes Rivers of Hope.

Impact: We are not yet able to say for sure what imp[act this funding cut will have on Minnesota. There is $8 million allocated to supplement this cut on the Governor’s budget but it still needs to pass through the legislature for approval. If for some reason it doesn’t pass the 250 organizations currently receiving funding through VOCA would likely receive at least a 25% cut in funding. VOCA funds make up approximately 30% of Rivers of Hope’s annual budget. A 25% cut would be a decrease of approximately $55,000 a year or over 50 hours a week of free advocacy services for victims.

Rivers of Hope is the primary provider of domestic violence advocacy services in Wright & Sherburne Counties. All services are free for anyone experiencing domestic violence. There are 7 advocates at Rivers of Hope, and all of them are tirelessly working towards helping our community members who are faced with violence in their relationships. Due to the unique insight into our community, we see a need for the growth and expansion of our programs and services. However, as we anticipate this funding cut, we are preparing ourselves for the reality that we might need to downsize instead. Rivers of Hope has been around for over 30 years and has gone through challenges like this before. The support of the community allowed this organization to continue to operate even in some of the most difficult economic climates.

As we learn more, we will do our best to keep you posted. We truly appreciate the support you have shown us over the years and are continually humbled by how generous our community is.

Thank you for being an ally for survivors of domestic violence.
